Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College Launches AI Trust, Assurance, and Governance (AITAG) Certificate Program

Carnegie Mellon University’s (CMU) Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy today announced the launch of the AI Trust, Assurance, and Governance (AITAG) Certificate Program. The new executive education offering will equip senior leaders and technology professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to test, validate, secure, and govern artificial intelligence systems at enterprise scale.

Developed in conjunction with the Artificial Intelligence Measurement Science and Engineering Center (AIMSEC) at CMU’s Heinz College, AITAG is a four-module program focused on operationalizing trustworthy AI throughout the AI lifecycle. Participants will learn how to integrate AI evaluation, adversarial testing, cybersecurity, operational controls, risk management, and enterprise governance into a cohesive assurance capability. Through practical frameworks, real-world case studies, and implementation-focused exercises, participants will develop the skills to establish confidence in AI systems, produce defensible assurance evidence, support regulatory and audit requirements, and enable their organizations to deploy and scale AI responsibly.

“The future of AI depends not only on advancing the technology, but also on ensuring it is trustworthy, secure, and responsibly deployed,” said Ramayya Krishnan, Research Director of AIMSEC. “This program reflects Carnegie Mellon’s commitment to preparing professionals with the interdisciplinary knowledge required to operationalize AI assurance across the enterprise.”

The AITAG curriculum follows an AI assurance lifecycle of Understand, Validate, Secure, and Govern.  Participants will examine the foundations of AI assurance; structured testing, validation, and red teaming; AI cybersecurity and the security of agentic systems; and AI risk management, operational controls, continuous monitoring, and enterprise governance.

The program is designed for senior leaders and professionals responsible for AI assurance and governance, including Chief AI Officers, Chief Data Officers, Chief Technology Officers, Chief Information Security Officers, AI and machine learning engineers, AI product and program managers, and cybersecurity professionals. It also serves government, defense, and public sector professionals responsible for deploying and assuring mission-critical AI systems.

The inaugural cohort will be offered virtually in four modules beginning in January 2027.
